Employees raise money for United Way

San Benito CISD John F. Barron Administration Building and Parental Involvement Program staff recently held a “White Elephant Sale” fundraiser, with proceeds to benefit the United Way of Northern Cameron County.

The staff-sponsor spring fundraiser netted $641. A similar event this past October raised $476. The total of $1,117 collected will be presented to United Way representatives.

Coordinated by the staff of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the white elephant sale allowed participants to competitively bid on more than 120 items that had been donated by school district employees.

Prized items included custom-made jewelry, kitchen and home décor items, purses, perfume sets and exercise equipment. Sold for 50 cents a piece, bidding tickets represented one opportunity to win each of the available items.

The fundraiser emphasizes the importance of donating to charitable organizations that help individuals or select groups throughout the local community. As San Benito CISD Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Celeste Sanchez explains, “We give to help others in need, and we do it with great respect and love for our community.”

The goal of the United Way is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.

Event coordinators and participants enthusiastically fundraised for a worthy cause, enjoying moments of fun and camaraderie in the process.

Threat doesn’t scare away festival-goers

RIVERSIDE, Ohio (WDTN) – The St. Helen’s Festival is one of the area’s largest and longest running festivals in the region, and this week it was the target of a terrorist threat. But a bomb scare didn’t scare away the crowds at the festival. Event coordinators said they had good crowds Saturday.

“I’ve seen quite a few security around and everyone looks like they’re having a good time,” said festival-goer Mary Gaddis.

The festival is the parish’s major fundraiser that cooks up fun for thousands of people each year.

Any threat could turn their finances upside down.

Earlier this week the event was threatened by a disgruntled Denver Vinson who posted on Facebook that he was going to bomb the beloved festival.

“I think it’s crazy,” said festival supporter Caleb Rudd. “Look where we’re at. This is a good time. There should be no drama.”

Security measures were taken this weekend to make sure there was no drama.

“I can’t give specifics, but throughout the weekend we’re using different measures with the bomb squad and other measures to make sure that nobody’s left anything and security measures such as that,” stated Sgt. Rett Close of the Riverside Police Department.

“I have 42 moonlight guards and then Riverside has their additional posted patrols as well,” said Scott Bistrek, St. Helen’s security.

“We have about the same crowd last year at this time as were having right now,” said festival volunteer Bill Fisher.

The festival runs from 1-9 p.m. Sunday.

Relay for Life Farmington Event Planners Expect Record-Breaking Year

Volunteers painted downtown Farmington purple Saturday, as part of an effort to create awareness for Farmington/Farmington Hills Relay for Life, held May 18-19 in Shiawassee Park to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

In addition to ribbons tied on light poles, they posted flyers and gave out information from a booth at the Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market.

“This is the second time we’re doing this,” organizer Pilar Hagey said. “When we did it last year, between us being out and seeing people and the media coverage … more people heard about the event.”

That’s important, because teams continue fundraising during the Relay, from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, with sales and other activities at their campsites. The public is invited to participate.

There will also be entertainment by local bands, and a pancake breakfast Sunday morning, hosted by the Farmington Elks lodge.

“It’s been a goal-breaking year for us so far,” Hagey said. “Our team goal was 31, and we have 34. Our financial goal is $87,000 and we have over $72,000. This time last year, we were at maybe $30,000.”

Momentum has carried forward from last year, she added, with events like spaghetti dinners and last weekend’s Relay for Fun fundraiser at Zap Zone in Farmington.

“The teams are excited, they’re motivated and they’ve done some creative fundraisers,” Hagey said.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Women took to the streets in Poughkeepsie in celebration of International Women’s Day on Saturday.

Ladies, lawmakers, and community members took a stroll over the Poughkeepsie side of the Walkway over the Hudson.

The event is based on an event originally put on by Women on Women International.
Event coordinators said this walk wasn’t a fundraiser. It’s purpose is just to celebrate women.

“This is such a wonderful, local celebration of an international event. There’s no better way to think global than act local and be part of this today,” said Didi Barrett, Millbrook Assembly.

“This county has always been led by wonderfully strong and talented and capable women and I’m more than happy to follow them,” said Marc Molinaro, Dutchess County Executive.

This is the walk’s third year in the Hudson Valley.

Tixelated Launches Crowdfunding Platform for Event Planners

When it comes the event experience, in most cases, attending the actual event is the most enjoyable part of the process. Washington-based startup Tixelated is trying to change that with their planning and crowdfunding platform for events, which aims to enhance the social experience of events from start to finish. The web-based platform, which is targeted primarily to college students, is currently gearing up for a large public launch just in time for the school year.

“I’ve been an entrepreneur my whole life, and I’ve mostly been involved in the event space,” Tixelated co-founded Philippe Chetrit said in an interview. “What I noticed is that there’s nothing really wrong with events, but how we get invited, get tickets, and fund events needed to change. I really wanted to disrupt that space and build something original.”

Tixelated is currently aiming their platform at college kids looking for an alternative way to organize and fund events and parties. The platform gives event organizers two ways to fund their events: a goal-based fundraiser, which allows event planners to raise money for events by crowdfunding for a seven-day period; and a donation-based fundraiser, which allows guests to chip in money to events, without requiring guests to hit a certain funding goal. Tixelated charges a 5 percent fee for both funding methods, charging $0.25 for every $5.00 donation to both the host and the guest. For the crowdfunding method, Tixelated only charges guests for donations if the goal amount is raised and then transfers the funds to hosts via PayPal or Dwolla.

To get college students on board, the company is currently using brand ambassadors to promote the platform and are rewarding students with incentives and prizes for hosting events. ”We’ve built a platform that makes it fun and collaborative to host an event, and provides users with a way to get friends to chip in,” Chetrit said. “It’s amazing the difference in people’s psychology when they’re not forced to go through a paywall. People enjoy being able to opt in or out.”

While Facebook is a major competitor with its built-in events feature, and Eventbrite and Meetup are other popular alternatives for hosting events, Tixelated is hoping to stand out by specifically focusing on students. “With Facebook it’s pretty vague as to who they’re targeting. Kids might think it’s too public or informal, and there’s no way to collect money,” Chetrit said. Tixelated is planning to offer more social features and bring gamification to the platform in the future. Chetir said one other major form of competition comes from hosts collecting money from guests at the door of events, but he said Tixelated is offering a different experience than this approach. “We’re adding value back into the events by making the entire process much more social from the time the invitation goes out.”

So far Tixelated, which has been completely bootstrapped to date, has hosted around 25 events on the platform. Chetrit said that on average, each event brings 40 new users onto the platform with around 25 percent of them going on to create their own events. Though Tixelated is strictly desktop web-based for now, Chetrit said they are currently in the process of developing their mobile site, a necessary step as they’re going after tech savvy users aged 18-24. “We want to really grow the product as our users grow,” he said. “Eventually we want to replace the online event organizing experience with one that is much more social and engaging.”

With students already turning to Facebook to organize events, the company’s biggest challenge will be convincing students they should use Tixelated to organize their events, rather than just showing up to parties with cash or using existing online event platforms. Tixelated also doesn’t say exactly what might happen if a party gets funded but the organizer doesn’t come through after collecting the cash, and even notes specifically in its terms that it doesn’t screen Tixelated users.

With other companies attempting the “Kickstarter for events” model though, including Zokos for dinner parties, the crowdfunding model should gain more popularity, and since it gives hosts an out if their goal isn’t reached, it could be attractive to starving students.
