SEBRING – Hundreds of Florida Hospital Heartland Division visitors and employees test drove brand new Ford vehicles around the hospital Friday morning, all in the name charity.
Bill Jarrett Ford teamed up with Ford Motor Company for the fifth annual Krusin’ 4 Kids event. Test drivers zoomed around for a quick drive with Florida Hospital Foundation employees throughout the day.
Florida Hospital Heartland Division Foundation Executive Director Jamie Bateman and Development Coordinator Christen Johnson were out and about Friday making sure the event ran smoothly.
“Ford Motor Company partnered up with Bill Jarrett for this event. Bill Jarrett provided all the vehicles for test drives today and the event is being documented for Ford’s national campaign,” Bateman said.
Drivers hopped in and out of Ford F-150 trucks, Focus, and the new and improved Ford Fusion Hybrid.
“For every test drive Ford Motor Company and Bill Jarrett donates $20. All the money raised will go to the Foundation. The money will be used to benefit the renovations of the pediatrics unit,” explained Johnson.
The total needed to fund the pediatrics unit is $200,000. The Foundation’s event coordinators are aiming to raise $10,000 during Krusin for Kids.
“We’ve had just over 200 drivers this morning, our goal is to have 500,” Johnson said. “Last year’s event raised $8,600.”
Following the test drives, participants filled out a survey that will be used as part of Ford’s campaign. Goodie bags were provided for each of participants.
Bateman admits the annual event brings out the best in the Florida Hospital employees each year.
“The competition between the departments. We just have awesome support for the event from all the employees. Each of the departments try to see how many participants they can get to test drive so it becomes a great event,” Bateman said.
Krusin’ 4 Kids has become an important stable for the Foundation. Each year the money raised helps support the hospital’s expansions, renovations and other worthy causes. The Ford Motor Company and Bill Jarrett also hosts Krusin’ events for local schools in various areas.

Fan club weekend to celebrate 50 years of ‘General Hospital’ with special events
Each year, “General Hospital” fans from all over the world make the journey to California for “General Hospital” Fan Club Weekend. This long-running, annual event has gone beyond just a weekend since its inception, however, and now boasts five fun-filled days with your favorite GH cast members.
“);
}
This year promises to be extra special for many reasons, most notably that 2013 heralds the 50th anniversary of this iconic ABC sudser. With that incredible landmark in mind, the organizers and event coordinators are pulling out all the stops for what promises to be a must-attend weekend. As of Sat., May 18, the schedule has been updated with tickets still available to some events, while others have long-ago sold out.
“General Hospital” airs weekdays at 1pm on Riverside affiliate KABC channel 7.
There are cast members appearing that have not been seen at GHFCW for many years, including Finola Hughes (Anna Devane), whose event has already sold out, and the first-ever individual event for GH legend Genie Francis, who has played Laura Webber Baldwin Spencer (soon to be Baldwin again!) on and off for 32 years.
Fans will also see the return of some of the most popular events of the year, including the Rebecca Herbst Soiree and Laura Wright’s special evening, featuring wines from her own Standing Sun winery.
One new and very special event on the calendar this year is the GH 50th Anniversary Past Cast Event, which will be held on Sun., July 28 from 11am to 4pm. Event coordinator Claire Mullen was tight lipped when asked for details, stating there will be no announcement of actors attending; however, with 50 years on the air, there is no telling who may show up for this unprecedented event, making this an afternoon not to be missed. Tickets are $125 and very limited. The order form can be found here.
There are also new cast members holding events this year, including a special evening destined to be one of the most fun and relaxing of the entire weekend. Girls Night In, hosted by Teresa Castillo (Sabrina Santiago) and Emily Wilson (Ellie Trout), offers fans the opportunity to kick back in their pajamas and slippers, indulge in special gourmet comfort foods and wind down after a long weekend. Some special friends of the girls are also slated to make an appearance, plus gifts and lots of fun GH girl talk. The event will be held Sun., July 28 from 9pm to midnight. Tickets are still available for $85 per person but will no doubt sell out, so get your order form here to purchase.
The most popular event of the entire weekend, The Main Cast Event, is, as usual, already sold out with no waiting list; however, there are still several events with available tickets. Fans are encouraged to purchase as soon as possible as very few events are available by the time the weekend arrives. For the full schedule of events and available tickets, visit the official “General Hospital” Fan Club Weekend page.
For those who are new to the event this year, don’t miss out on the most complete, comprehensive book on the subject of attending “General Hospital” Fan Club Weekend. “You (and Me!) at the General Hospital Fan Club Weekend” presents the must-know ins and outs of getting the most out of the weekend, authored by long-time GHFCW staffer Katrina Rasbold. This 153-page e-book, which also includes 260 photos from previous years, will be your go-to guide for everything from where to eat, how to engage the actors during your autograph and photo sessions and how best to schedule your time and money. You’ll also finding yourself smiling and laughing at Katrina’s “behind-the-scenes” stories from 12 years of events. The e-book can be purchased for $5.00 in an easily-downloadable PDF file.
“General Hospital” Fan Club Weekend runs from July 25-29 at Sportsmen’s Lodge Hotel and Event Center in Studio City, CA.

Rain once again puts a damper on weekend events

MINNEAPOLIS — It might seem like Mother Nature has it out for weekend event planners. At least in Minnesota. At least this spring.
On Saturday, races, garage sales and farmers markets all tried to survive yet another rainy weekend morning.
“With this weekend, we’re probably two to three weeks behind,” said Beka Brown, a worker at the Minneapolis Farmers Market.
Brown held out hope people would see beyond the downpour and chilly temperatures.
“We’re all confident we’re going to catch up here and sell it all,” she said.
Elana Dahlberg with Secondhand Hounds held onto a similar optimism.
“We’re just trying to sort through things and hoping tomorrow is no rain, and we’ll be able to sell something,” she said.
On Friday, storms caused Secondhand Hounds to close its garage sale early. But Dahlberg hoped the event — a fundraiser for the animal non-profit organization — would recover enough on Saturday afternoon and Sunday to raise money for their cause.
“[It's] all for the dogs. It all goes to save more dogs and the operational costs of Secondhand Hounds,” she said.
But some do Mother Nature will play a critical — if not, consistent — role in their spring-time events.
“This is the biggest fundraiser that we do for the year. It’s always weather-dependent. This is our fourth year of doing it, too. This is the third year it’s rained,” said Melissa Jones with TPT, which was hosting its Family Fun Day at Como Town and Como Park Zoo.
But Jones noted — it’s not unusual for hearty Minnesotans to scope out the silver lining.
“You know hard core Minnesotans who came out at ten o’clock this morning didn’t have a wait at all. They were on those rides first thing,” she said.
Mandy Boland and her four-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Carly, agreed.
“We thought it would be fewer people so it was more of an attraction,” Boland said.

Montgomery Kicks Off 1st Annual Riverbend Brewfest and River Jam
The long-time tradition of Montgomery’s Jubilee Cityfest is no more and today it’s replacement… the city’s first ever, Riverbend Brewfest and River Jam Music Festival, is underway!
It’s a new festival split up into two events at the Riverfront: the Riverbend Brewfest and the River Jam — And while it is replacing a 36-year tradition, they hope this new event evolves into one you’ll be seeing for many years to come…
It’s a new tradition. One that’s been six months in the making. A two-part event at Montgomery’s Riverfront Park starting Saturday afternoon with the Riverbend Brewfest.
It’s a beer-lovers haven with more than 100 different types of beer from more than 40 different breweries from across the nation — everything from local to specialty beers…
In just one hour, the riverfront sold about 600 tickets. Event coordinators say they expected about 1,000 people at the event… and were pleased with the turnout.
“When we first started this up and we were looking at how we wanted to plan this event, we wanted something that would have some longevity to it and basically, like I said, to carry on the tradition of a live music event down here. The Brewfest is just an added bonus,” Said event coordinator, Ken Reynolds.
And as the sun set, part two kicked off: The River Jam Music Festival – a free concert featuring two stages and 8 artists…
But even still, this event is replacing another that lasted 36 years. Yet, some people think starting a new tradition could benefit the city of Montgomery.
“I think Jubilee got a little played out and it’s something new, something different for everybody,” Said Montgomery resident, Drew Holloway.
“I like it better because my mother used to work the jubiliees back when it was a playground, a field, back in the 80′s. Now, it’s better for kids and more attracted to what people come out to see and also travelers come in!” Said Montgomery resident, Cliff Patton.
Now, the event is in the midst of wrapping up as we speak….and because of the rain, two of the River Jam Acts were cancelled.
But inspite of the rain, event coordinators tell me they had about 4,000 people come out for Saturday’s festivities.
Proceeds from the sale of some of the beers will be donated to the Boston Marathon Victims’ Relief Fund.

Return to the Red Planet
EGLIN AFB — More than 300 fifth-graders took the school bus to Mars on Thursday.
At the annual Marsville event put on by the environmental compliance division of the 96th Civil Engineering Group, the students simulated what life would be like if they visited the Red Planet.
When the students arrived at the hangar at the 33rd Fighter Wing, they hunkered down with sheets of plastic and duct tape. Then, to the kids’ delight, a box fan inflated the “pods” into structures humans might build to survive in the oxygen-deprived environment.
Volunteers from the 96th Civil Engineering Group visited students at Lewis School and Baker School and Longwood and Wright elementary schools over the last month to talk about the conditions on Mars and the challenges humans would face trying to live there.
They talked about air and water quality, transportation, communication, food and nutrition — all the things needed to support a colony, said Katie Eichling, a contract employee with the 96th Civil Engineering Group and one of the event’s coordinators.
“We told them there are no stores on Mars, so everything you need you have to figure out how to make yourself,” she said.
Marsville, which has been held for 18 years, is designed to get the students interested in science and math, Eichling said.
The students split into groups Thursday to come up with solutions to some of the challenges humans would face.
“We learned how we can live there and how we can communicate from Mars to Earth,” said April Dutollo, a 12-year-old student at Lewis.
Using cardboard boxes and aluminum foil, her group built a radio with a satellite, solar panels and several buttons for astronauts to talk to people on Earth.
April’s classmate, 11-year-old Yanae Powell, was tasked with coming up with ways to get oxygen and water.
“We learned about the aquifers,” she said. “There’s a bunch of water under the surface of Mars.”
More than 80 airmen volunteered for the event, and several of them spoke about how the students could use science and math to follow in their footsteps.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians showed students their bomb-locating robots. An F-35 was parked in front of the hangar, and pilots explained how they fly the jets and use them to launch missiles.
Master Sgt. Brian Jelsma of the 728th Air Control Squadron helped students build the pods.
“It spurs the imagination,” he said.
As the kids started dismantling the pods and preparing to return to their schools, Eichling said Marsville was a success once again.
“Hopefully they remember what we talked about and someday they may be the first people who actually get to go live on Mars,” she said.
CSR important for 93% of event planners
According to research carried out by Lime Venue Portfolio, only 32% of respondents would be more likely to book a venue which delivered social benefits.
A total of 60% of event organisers stated they may be more likely to book a venue with social benefits.
The study was conducted at Lime Venue Portfolio’s showcase event during International Confex, and surveyed 129 corporate meetings and events professionals.
While 77% of the companies represented at the showcase had official CSR policies in place, 84% of the corporate meetings and events planners surveyed claimed they consider the social impact of their events throughout the planning process.
Jo Austin, head of sales at Lime Venue Portfolio, said: “The contribution a venue makes to the local area and community is not always at the top of the agenda for event planners, with price, location and value for money being the three main factors.
“However, these survey results show this is undoubtedly a really important area for consideration, and we want to raise awareness of the CSR benefits when booking with a venue.”
However Charlie Banks, business development manager at Sustainable Events, told Event it “would be great if those percentages [of respondents] actually implemented sustainability”.
She added: “I think people like to think they consider CSR, but often location and price are more of a driver.”
