Business leader faces fraud charge

Federal authorities have filed fraud charges against a former president of the Filipino Chamber of Commerce in Hawaii.
Jason Pascua also was an Army reservist who ran unsuccessfully for a state House seat in Kaneohe. The FBI said he traded in his reputation in the community to bilk $1.4 million from 29 investors.
“This is not the kind of guy who screamed fraud when you met him. This is the kind of guy who screamed out you can trust him,” said FBI spokesman Tom Simon.
According to the criminal charges, Pascua lured dozens of people to invest in bogus rock concerts and celebrity events by promising returns of 20 to 50 percent.
Pascua told investors that he arranging concerts in Las Vegas and Honolulu for Beyonce, Britney Spears and other big-name stars, the FBI said.
“Several people jumped at the opportunity and invested hundreds of thousands of dollars only to find out that these shows never happened,” said Simon.
According to the FBI, the bulk of the money went to pay for lavish parties that Pascua held at Las Vegas night clubs.
Attorney Elijah Yip represents one victim who lost $150,000 after Pascua promise him a 20 percent return.
“Of course that never materialized because there was no concert. There was no legitimate investment. As we learned now, this appeared to be a big ponzi scheme,” Yip said.
Many of the victims include fellow Army reserve members, friends in the local music scene and several Waikiki residents, the FBI said.
Pascua, a former Kaneohe resident who now lives in Arizona, did not return calls. He is scheduled to appear in Honolulu Federal Court in May, where he is expected to plead guilty.

Nevada Regulators Warn Casinos About Pool Parties – KLAS
LAS VEGAS – Metro Police and the Nevada Gaming Control Board are warning hotels and casinos they will not tolerate properties that let their guests run wild.
Spring break season has arrived and thousands of college students are flooding into Las Vegas’ night clubs and pools. Tourists want a good time and hotels and casinos want their business.
Jody Lake is the chief operating officer at the Hard Rock Hotel and it’s his job to make sure partiers have a good time.
“We definitely want to promote a full experience here, but safety is first with respect to our guests,” Lake said. “We beef up our security around the property and we just take a lot of precautions, extra training for the life guard staff, the staff outside and inside.”
The Gaming Control Board and Metro Police are giving properties a stern warning to make sure they are doing everything they can to cut down on crime. The control board said it will be going undercover into clubs and party pools to make sure hotel staff aren’t facilitating the illegal behavior. Board officials praised properties like the Hard Rock Hotel for their efforts with visitors feeling safe is part of the good time.
“We do a very thorough job of that we make sure that we are bringing in the right team members and by bringing in the right team members we can keep a lot of that element out, outside of our property,” Lake added.
Last year, the Palms Hotel owners were fined a million dollars after an investigation found employees were taking money in exchange for arranging for prostitutes, cocaine and prescription pills.

Stars from the CBS reality show “Survivor” are coming to Las Vegas to see if they can outplay, outdrink, and outparty in Sin City. Survivor fans will be given the opportunity to meet, greet, and attend a party bus tour with their favorite castaways on February 27-28.
On Wednesday, February 27, a viewing party of “Survivor: Caramoan – Fans vs. Favorites” will be held at Bally’s Hotel Casino from 7pm-10pm. Brandon Hantz, a “Favorite” on the current season, will be attending the event. Other Survivors attending include:

SpringHill Suites is located on 2989 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, NV 89109. Admittance to the Survivor signing is open to all ages. The entrance fee is $10, which benefits the POOF Foundation, a Las Vegas charity dedicated to the rescue and treatment of homeless pets.
After the signing, the Survivors will have a cocktail reception at Bally’s Hotel Casino from 8pm-9:30pm. Then from 10pm-3am, MTV’s Brandon Drake Nelson will host a party bus tour with Celebrity Vegas Tours, taking the Survivors and fans to the Las Vegas night clubs REVOLUTION and LAX.

In 1857, the Sacred Harmonic Choir, conducted by John Carter, performed Handel’s Messiah in Toronto. It is thought to have been the first complete oratorio presented in Upper Canada.
In 1939, Eddie Kendricks, an original member of “The Temptations,” was born in Birmingham, Ala. He sang lead on “The Temptations” first hit, “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” in 1964. He was with the group for 11 years, leaving in 1971. He topped the U.S. charts in 1973 with “Keep on Truckin’,” and the following year reached No. 2 with “Boogie Down.” He also enjoyed success in the 1980s touring and recording with fellow “Temptation” alumnus David Ruffin, and with Darryl Hall and John Oates. Kendricks died of lung cancer in Birmingham on Oct. 5, 1992.
In 1942, white bluesman Paul Butterfield was born in Chicago. He formed his first blues band, featuring Mike Bloomfield on guitar, in 1965, when the idea of a white man playing the blues was still regarded as novel. Butterfield had developed his harmonica style by playing with black musicians at clubs on Chicago’s south side. Butterfield was responsible for first bringing the sound of the black man’s music to the mass North American public, but by 1968 his group had been eclipsed by the British band “Cream,” and its lead guitarist Eric Clapton. “The Paul Butterfield Blues Band” ceased to exist in 1972, and Butterfield began a solo career. In 1977, “Elvis Costello and the Attractions” performed on “Saturday Night Live” as a last-minute replacement for the “Sex Pistols,” who were denied U.S. visas. Costello was told not to play his song “Radio, Radio” because of its criticisms of the broadcasting industry, but he interrupted another song to play it.
In 1982, “The Who” played the last concert of their “farewell” tour at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens. By the end of the decade, they had reunited for another tour.
In 1982, blues singer Big Joe Williams died in Macon, Miss., at the age of 79. His best known song — “Baby, Please Don’t Go” — was covered by numerous rock bands.
In 1982, singer Karen Carpenter performed for the last time, singing Christmas carols at the private school attended by her godchildren. Her friends tried to talk her out of the performance because of her poor health. Carpenter died the following Feb. 4 of a heart attack brought on by anorexia nervosa at age 32.
In 1986, a jury in Las Vegas found that NBC defamed Wayne Newton by linking the singer to organized crime figures. He was awarded more than $19 million in damages. The amount was later reduced to about $6 million.

In 2010, musician and artist Don Van Vliet, who performed a complex brand of experimental rock under the name Captain Beefheart, died in California due to complications stemming from multiple sclerosis. He was 69.
In 2011, Cesaria Evora, the Cape Verdian singer nicknamed the “Barefoot Diva” who started singing as a teenager in the bayside bars in the 1950s and won a Grammy in 2003 after she took her African islands music to stages across the world, died at age 70.

It’s a fact, I checked: There’s no better way to bond with your pals than shooting some very large guns.
Machine Guns Vegas is just a few minutes off the Strip and offers a unique experience. This isn’t a rustic affair in what would otherwise pass as a hangar or oversized basement, either. MGV is a shooting range that also has an ultra-lounge feel, featuring comfortable seating, lights, music and a hospitable atmosphere. You can help yourself to bottled water or energy drinks and the staff is friendly. The safety range officers all have military experience, so even first-time shooters can feel at home here.

“Fantasy” lives up to its name with these dreamy vixens.
Of course, the action hero daydream isn’t the only fantasy you’ve had.
Luxor’s steamy “Fantasy” show is another great bachelor party pick. The 90-minute topless revue showcases beautiful women strutting their stuff in all sorts of scenarios and song-and-dance numbers, from an assortment of lingerie-clad beauties to a sexy rendition of “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.” Comedic impressionist Sean E. Cooper’s James Brown and Sammy Davis Jr. impersonations, among a surprise other few, make the show even more fun.
Whether your favorite is Lorena, Yesi, Ashton or Kristin, this “Fantasy” is sure to live up to all of yours.
“Crazy Girls” over at the Riviera is another pick, and a Vegas icon – it recently celebrated 25 years and the “No ifs, ands, or butts” statue is probably one of the most photographed spots in the city.
CG features eight gorgeous girls on stage, dancing to a variety of songs from Aerosmith’s “Pink,” to Ruth Wallis’ hilarious song “You’ve Gotta Have Boobs,” and the finale girl-on-girl performance is done with minimal lighting to help accentuate the mood and beauty of the girls. It’s truly a topless revue that feels like an amped-up strip club.

Be gentlemen at the gentlemen’s club
Now, the strip club is a bachelor party tradition for as long as either of those two things has existed.
Sapphire is big. Really big.
Sapphire Las Vegas is a great choice, and its sheer size and variety alone make it worth checking out.
Ten skyboxes with different themes, areas for private lap dances, a champagne room and a karaoke room (!) make up Sapphire’s plentiful amenities, while nearly-nude bodies are everywhere from the VIP booths to the two main stages (and overhead catwalk – yes, Sapphire is that big).

Ryan Lochte Clothing Line Is Actually Happening, Says Ryan Lochte
Remember the much-talked about, much-feared Ryan Lochte clothing line? Jeah, it’s happening.
The Olympic swimmer, known as much for his flashy style as his speed in the water, told Celebuzz exclusively that he is planning to launch his own clothing line.
Or, he tries to. The interviewer on The Daily Buzz was insistent on getting some good entertainment dish, asking Lochte about his plans for a reality show (spoiler alert: he’s “in talks” with E!). But all Lochte wants to talk about is his clothing line. When asked about the reality show, he says the show will “pretty much follow me of my normal day of just training and my new fashion line.” When asked what will make the show unique, he replies “It’s gonna be me, me being myself and I’m just pretty much gonna show the world that and my new fashion line.”
So in case you had any doubts, Ryan Lochte has a fashion line on the way. He’s already got plenty of custom grillz, special razors and a nearly-trademarked catchphrase. He’s even got a top model all lined up to walk in his fashion show. Now all he needs is… actual clothing made by him.
Oh, and people to buy it.

PHOTO: South Florida Gets Space-Aged New Locker Room
The trend of college football locker rooms being renovated to resemble Las Vegas night clubs continues.
Following a Sunday practice at Raymond James Stadium, South Florida’s football team returned to the Lee Roy Selmon Athletics Building to find a new locker room outfitted with green LED panels on the sides.
The response from the Bulls’ players has been overwhelmingly glowing (pun intended), according to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times. Oregon’s space-aged approach to player comfort in recent years has changed the game when it comes to locker room design, and USF’s foray into the field is a tasteful one.
Particularly in comparison to the “locker room as strip club” digs that SMU unveiled almost one year ago to the day.

Perks of Being a Wallflower gets Pittsburgh opening date
“Perks of Being a Wallflower” now has an official opening date in Pittsburgh: Sept. 28.
No word yet on where the made-in-Pittsburgh movie will play. “Perks” stars Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller and Mae Whitman, among others, and is based on the Stephen Chbosky novel of the same name. He also wrote the screenplay and directed the film about a shy, sensitive teenager torn between trying to live his life and escape from it.

Pitt Football Camp Day 2 Notes – Ray Graham Looks Good
First it was a zig, then a zag and then the defender charged with trying to tackle him (more accurately, touch him) looked pretty silly as he fell to the ground with what those far more hip than me would call “broken ankles”…..
And with that one play Ray Graham sent a strong message that he may just be back to being himself a lot quicker than anyone – including himself – could have imagined.
It was a running play, sort of a counter option and Graham got the ball, made a great cut and shook a defender then sprinted to the open field.
At the end of it he flashed that million dollar smile so as to say “I’m back…..”
And don’t think his teammates didn’t notice it, either, as he drew a lot of “oohs” and “ahhs” and “attaboys” from the players who were sitting out of the drill and even some of those observing practice.
It was only one moment of what was no doubt a great day for Graham as he looked faster, looked more confident, was able to cut and resembled the old guy, the one who was the nation’s second leading rusher before he injured his knee last October against Connecticut.
After practice Graham said he definitely felt much better and he said he felt more confident in his knee and he – as well as his Panthers teammates – is hoping that he will continue to take strides forward each day.
“I played with more confidence today, I went out there and just didn’t think about things,” Graham said. “The more I stretched, the better I felt and I just went out and played. The first day was a test day, just trying to see how I feel and I feel as though I am progressing as the days go on. And hopefully day three will be even better than day two. I just need to get better.
“I definitely felt a lot better, my knee is going to be sore after practice anyway. But when I made that move, I cut on my leg, it felt good. And I got tripped up earlier and I fell on it but it didn’t hurt at all.
“So this is a confidence thing, it is a mental thing and like I said every time, the more I don’t think about it and just do it, the better I will feel.”
Graham said that one of the most important days will be Friday when the Panthers put the pads on for the first time because he wants to see how he will respond to getting hit for the first time.
Today he fell on it and said that it didn’t hurt and that helped his confidence and he also felt strong when he made his cuts. It should also be noted that he participated in every drill, including the team drills, and that is a big stride forward in itself because he sat out all of the team stuff Monday.
Paul Chryst, while happy Graham had a good day, was not ready to declare him back and even quipped something about his “half-speed” cut and that’s sort of been the way Chryst has handled things since the start: He undersells and wants to over deliver, he is very slow to heap praise on players until they earn it and he’s realistic.
** Another player who seemed to take a step forward was outside linebacker Todd Thomas, who took some first team reps today and seemed to move around very well.
Like Ray Graham, Thomas is coming back from ACL surgery and while he has started with the second-team, he is clearly going to be a starter once he gets healthy and Chryst said they are trying to ease him back into the mix and be smart with him.
I can tell you, just from the observations, he really seemed to be moving around well and he made a few plays so that’s a good thing.
“It is the same thing with Ray, he did it and every day you hope he can go a little more,” Chryst said. “We have to be smart in how we approach it with Todd and Ray. And Chris [Jacobson] has done a good job but we just have to be smart with those guys.”
Thomas worked in with Nicholas Grigsby and Shane Gordon with the first unit but the linebacker who may have had the best day was Eric Williams, who had two interceptions and deflected a third pass that was intercepted.
Williams is long and athletic and fits in well with this unit and what Dave Huxtable wants to do so I think he has a chance to be a very good player this year.
*** Speaking of athletes, the one thing I am impressed with about the defense is the overall athleticism. I like the linebacker group a lot –it is not experienced but they are more athletic than the past few years. I think the corners are athletic and the defensive tackles as well.
I asked Chryst about it and he, too, likes the athleticism of his defense.
“I think we have a chance to [be pretty athletic] and that will be the fun thing about tomorrow as we progress and we can put helmets and shoulder pads on and we can combine some more of the physical aspects of the game,” Chryst said. “Hopefully that can be something that when it is said and done, they will say that was an athletic group but time will tell.”
****** I’m going to do my best to make sense of the offensive line depth chart but I have to be honest it is going to be tough until they start scrimmaging more. The first-team is pretty set in stone (left to right) King-Jacobson-Turnley-Schlieper-Rotheram.
The second team is a hodge-podge of players and this is what I would say – it appears to me that Adam Bisnowaty, the freshman from Fox Chapel, is getting a few second-team reps here and there at left tackle.
It won’t shock me if that is where he ends up on the two-deep.
It looks like Artie Rowell is the second-team center – and the only other center beyond Turnley as he took all of the snaps that Turnley did not take.
Beyond that, it will be a few more days to sort it out as there are a lot of guys who were shuffled in and out between the second and third team – and being as these were two days without pads on, there isn’t much to learn about guys other than Adam Bisnowaty can move around reasonably well and looks like he has chance to be a good player.
From what I could tell, Bisnowaty, Rushell Shell, Terrell Jackson and Darryl Render were the four true freshmen who got some reps with the second team.
Also, LaFayette Pitts played almost exclusively with the first unit today at corner opposite of K’Wuan Williams but it may just be a case of where they are going to rotate those young guys with the first and second group until one of them seizes the job.
Pitts is a strong kid, a bigger corner and he looks to me like he is starting to grasp things better and that has enabled him to play a little faster. I think his size and strength will be important in this defense because the corners will be on an island so often and asked to do a lot more press coverage than before.
That’s what makes Pitts so attractive – he is strong enough to man-handle receivers at the line of scrimmage and athletic enough and fast enough to cover once they get off the line.
** Only one injury to report again – offensive tackle Tom Ricketts missed practice with some sort of an upper body injury. He was hurt in Monday’s practice and did not participate today.
**** The defensive end spot is one to watch – I think Tyrone Ezell and LaQuentin Smith (both who were moved there to shore up the position) have a chance to be pretty good additions and may end up as the starting duo. There is also Shayne Hale, T.J. Clemmings and Bryan Murphy competing and so there will be a lot of good battles for playing time and to get into the rotation.
I watched Ezell today and I’ll be honest I really like what I see from him so far (again, without pads so be careful) but he has good explosiveness and athleticism and he is a big strong kid who will be able to take on blocks at the point of attack. He seems like a good fit there but we will have to see
***** Tomorrow I will go into more detail with the receivers and who is doing what but a good name to keep track of is Brendon Felder, who did some really nice things today in some of the drills. I like his speed and his ability to make yards after the catch. Like I said, I will have a lot more about the receivers tomorrow and will even throw in what I’ve seen from the tight ends.
Here is one teaser – J.P. Holtz is a man-child and it won’t shock me if he sees the field early…..

Nice updates, Paul….great to have something to read and discuss aside fom recruiting.
I’m detecting a more positive overall tone from you than in the past few years. I’ll be reading with interest to see if your spin remain so as camp progresses… Fingers crossed…

JP Holtz – I wish we had a couple more of him. I’d put one at linebacker and one at DE – maybe two at linebacker…
He is going to be a star – especially in this offense. He’s big and he can run.
And that’s good news about Felder – we could use some new blood at WR, especially speed, speed, speed. Oops!
